Animal Spirits

The video is a disjunctive mix of genres and types of moving image, including talking-head interviews, advertising, video game graphics, and even music videos. It presents real people, playing themselves, in scenes that oscillate between documentary and fiction, as well as computer generated imagery of various sorts—intertitles, text and wireframe overlays, color shifts and distortions, digital silhouetting, and AI animations. It starts as a kind of infomercial, with an actor playing John Maynard Keynes explaining his concept of “animal spirits”—how emotions like greed or fear affect economic decision-making—in a digitally-rendered sports stadium. The scene immediately cuts to the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin, revealing images of Adolf Hitler and adoring crowds. The same group behaviors and emotions that affect capitalist economies, Animal Spirits suggests, also affect politics.

Evolutionsgeschichte, „Survival of the fittest“, Dynamiken ökonomischer Märkte in Zeiten wirtschaftlicher Unsicherheiten, der Einfluss menschlicher Emotionen darauf, Überlebenskampf, Selbstheilungskräfte und die Frage wie globale Geister neoliberalistischer Ausbeutung im Zaum gehalten werden können, treffen in ihrer Installation „Animal Spirits“ auf Animationen eines Wolfes, Interviews mit dem spanischen Schafshirten Nel, der der Künstler*innengruppe INLAND angehört und Youtube Aktivismus betreibt sowie Abhandlungen über den Käse-Bitcoin als Alternativwährung.

Evolutionary history, “survival of the fittest”, the dynamics of economic markets in times of financial uncertainty, the influence of human emotions upon them, the struggle for survival, self-healing powers, and the question of how the global spirits of neoliberal exploitation might be held in check — in her installation “Animal Spirits” all of this meets animations of a wolf, interviews with the Spanish shepherd Nel, a member of the artists’ group INLAND who also practises YouTube activism, and disquisitions on cheese-Bitcoin as an alternative currency.

Im Zentrum von „Animal Spirit“ steht der Sündenbock Wolf. Nicht nur hierzulande löst das ungezähmte Tier viele Emotionen nicht nur unter Bauern und Jägern aus, auch in anderen Erdteilen ist der Wolf ein Symbol für Einmischung und ungewollte Veränderungen. So begleitet die Videoarbeit, die sich aus historischem Filmmaterial, Animationen, Motion Graphics und dokumentarischen Interviews zusammensetzt, unter anderem den spanischen Schäfer Nel, der einen Wolfspelz trägt und sich als Aktivist versteht. Er ist nicht nur Schäfer, sondern produziert auch Käse und ist Youtuber sowie Teil der spanischen Künstlergruppe INLAND. Außerdem gibt es eine Reality–TV-Show mit ihm und einen Cheese coin – eine Kryptowährung.

trans.At the centre of “Animal Spirit” stands the scapegoat wolf. It is not only here that the untamed animal stirs strong feelings, and not only among farmers and hunters; in other parts of the world too the wolf is a symbol of interference and of unwanted change. So the video work — assembled from historical footage, animation, motion graphics and documentary interviews — follows, among others, the Spanish shepherd Nel, who wears a wolf pelt and understands himself as an activist. He is not only a shepherd but also makes cheese and is a YouTuber, as well as a member of the Spanish artists' group INLAND. There is also a reality-TV show with him, and a Cheese coin — a cryptocurrency.
