The City of Broken Windows

In The city of broken windows (2018), Hito Steyerl indaga l’utilizzo dell’intelligenza artificiale in relazione ai sistemi di sicurezza e riflette su come l’immaginario contemporaneo nell’era delle nuove tecnologie plasmi la nostra percezione della realtà. Il lavoro si presenta come un’installazione immersiva pensata per lo spazio di forma paralleloidaledella Manica Lunga del Castello di Rivoli. Ai lati opposti dell’area espositiva si trovano due video documentari dai quali l’artista Chris Toepfer, che ha collaborato con Hito nella realizzazione dell’installazione, estrapola alcune frasi che poi riporta sulle pareti della stanza. Al centro lo spazio lungo e stretto è vuoto, intervallato da frammenti di suoni e parole che si mescolano in un’unica armoniosa visione d’insieme. Il primo documentario, Broken Window, ritrae due uomini e una donna intenti a registrare il suono prodotto dai vetri delle finestre che si infrangono all’interno della fabbrica di una società informatica. Lo scopo di tale studio è quello di rendere più efficienti i sistemi di sicurezza attraverso l’utilizzo di intelligenze artificiali che sappiano riconoscere questo tipo di suono in tutte le sue sfaccettature.

trans.In The City of Broken Windows (2018), Hito Steyerl investigates the use of artificial intelligence in relation to security systems, and reflects on how the contemporary imaginary in the era of new technologies shapes our perception of reality. The work takes the form of an immersive installation conceived for the parallelogram-shaped space of the Manica Lunga at the Castello di Rivoli. At opposite ends of the exhibition area are two video documentaries, from which the artist Chris Toepfer — who collaborated with Steyerl on the installation — extracts phrases that he then transfers onto the walls of the room. At the centre, the long narrow space is empty, punctuated by fragments of sounds and words that blend into a single harmonious whole. The first documentary, Broken Window, portrays two men and a woman intent on recording the sound produced by window panes shattering inside the factory of a computing company. The purpose of that study is to make security systems more efficient through the use of artificial intelligences able to recognise this kind of sound in all its nuances.

Il primo documentario, Broken Window, ritrae due uomini e una donna intenti a registrare il suono prodotto dai vetri delle finestre che si infrangono all’interno della fabbrica di una società informatica. Lo scopo di tale studio è quello di rendere più efficienti i sistemi di sicurezza attraverso l’utilizzo di intelligenze artificiali che sappiano riconoscere questo tipo di suono in tutte le sue sfaccettature. Dietro allo schermo piatto è posta una tela monocroma grigia di grandi dimensioni dipinta sempre da Chris Toepfer, il quale è anche protagonista del secondo documentario, Unbroken Windows. Il video racconta la storia di Camden, una città nello stato del New Jersey negli Sati Uniti, famosa per il suo alto tasso di criminalità. Un gruppo di volontari, capeggiati dallo stesso Toepfer, hanno deciso di dare il proprio contributo e di ricostruire le finestre rotte della città, simbolo di degrado e malavita, sostituendole con dei pannelli dipinti a mano che coprono le fenditure lasciate dai vetri mancanti.

Behind the flat screen hangs a large grey monochrome canvas, also painted by Chris Toepfer, who is likewise the protagonist of the second documentary, Unbroken Windows. The video tells the story of Camden, a city in New Jersey famous for its high crime rate. A group of volunteers, led by Toepfer himself, decided to contribute by rebuilding the city's broken windows — symbols of decay and crime — replacing them with hand-painted panels covering the gaps left by the missing glass.
