But in a gentle voiceover in Steyerl’s immersive three-screen installation, which takes viewers for an underwater ride in a deadly submarine like the one designed by Leonardo da Vinci, she points out that the Renaissance artist valued life and would not appreciate a warmonger invoking his name. Although Leonardo da Vinci invented weapons such as an armored car, a giant crossbow, and a triple-barrel cannon, he concealed many of his designs to protect the world from their destructive capabilities.

The screens let visitors take a journey on the vessel, showing images of waterways, palaces and the open skies of Venice. The talking installation refers to the fact that Finmeccanica, Italy's principal arms manufacturer, is said to have changed its company name to Leonardo s.p.a. in honour of the Florentine artist — a metaphor for the theme of war.
